Watch in horror as evil smoke monster engulfs London on New Years Eve

Viewing the precession of bewildering light displays illuminate the skies of the world’s capital cities on New Year’s Eve, it’s becoming apparent that we’ve really hit the limit on what can be done with fireworks.

Whilst being spectacular for the first few seconds, you can’t help but get an acrid taste in your mouth as you watch a beloved world monument get shrouded in columns of smoke:

Dubai
Sydney
London
There’s an Eiffel Tower in there somewhere

I think a depiction of an apocalyptic alternative reality is not a great way to start a new year.

I did love London’s use of music this year, and Dubai’s electronic projections onto the Burj Khalifa. Yet it’s surprising to see fireworks make up the majority of end of year shows in 2017. Whilst perfect for small, personal celebrations, on the competitive world stage they lose some of their charm.
